What we solved

Our task was to design a solution for youths that want to get a start in financial literacy. Our research found that two of the biggest barriers are a lack of knowledge and the over complication of initial steps. Young adults under utilize the resources available and get stuck at the first step because they do not know where they stand financially.

Who we solved for

Meet Emily Turner!

Emily is a 29 year old software developer living in Toronto with her spouse. She is focused on saving for a home and preparing for future family expenses. Although comfortable with technology, Emily finds it challenging to prioritize her financial goals especially when planning for long term commitments like retirement.

Emily's user requirements

  • Needs to balance multiple goals
  • Wants to understand the impact of major life events
  • Needs to optimize savings and investments
  • Worries about economic stability
  • Struggles to prioritize the future
  • Needs concise planning

Our Solution

Through the research insights provided by Sun Life, internal innovation and external mentoring, we created Fund Forward. Fund Forward is a dynamic look forward into your financial future. We visualize the user end goal using a graph that highlights life milestones and their financial impact. Fund Forward acts as an infographic you can explore to learn more about specific financial decisions.

Challenges

The biggest limiting factor for our team was time. With only one day to research, ideate, design, and pitch to Sun Life judges, we had to make quick decisions. This time constraint limited our ability to conduct extensive user testing with diverse demographics. While Emily represented our primary persona, future iterations would benefit from testing with users across different age groups, income levels, and financial literacy backgrounds to ensure the tool is truly accessible and valuable for all young adults starting their financial journey.
